NMC, MVA tag-team to host Japanese Boy Scouts
The Northern Marianas College and Marianas Visitors Authority teamed up last month to teach 22 members of the Shizouka Boy Scouts of Fuji, Japan, and their two Scoutmasters facts about the islands.
NMC president Tony V. Deleon said the partnership between NMC and MVA taught the visitors English, the CNMI culture, customs, and heritage. The Boy Scouts also had the chance to interact with local students and peers of all ages.
“The Scouts toured the NMC campus, were oriented to all our resources and facilities, and visited all of the Cooperative Research Extension and Education Agriculture/Aquaculture sites, as well as the other highly valued labs,” he said.
The Shizouka Boy Scouts is a highly recognized and prestigious association that is well known for their great character development, leadership skills, and community service.
“In order to become a Shizouka Scout, the major requirements for the boys to be enrolled are high scholastic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities,” said Deleon Guerrero, adding that, as part of their extracurricular activities and further character development, the Japanese Scouts visited the CNMI to accomplish some goals.
Both the community college and the MVA acknowledged the support of the following for the success of the project: MVA’s Frank Tudela, CREES’ Ross Manglona, other fellow CREES presenters, Herbert Del Rosario, Joannie Dubrall and her aides, Sensei Yasukata, Maverick Itibus, and the NMC students.
The NMC president commended “most importantly” the CDI and UCEDD staff: Velma Iglecias, Dawn Chrystal Revilla, Laureen Manibusan, Josephine Fejeran, Richard Puhalla, Frank Hernane, and the entire NMC community.
