Recycle contest deadline nears

The Division of Environmental Quality “We Can Recycle” school competition will end on April 7. As of now, there are five schools determined to recycle the most aluminum cans, plastic and paper. So far, 8,220 pounds of recyclable materials have been delivered to participating recycling centers, including the transfer station.

“There is still time for schools to join the competition. The contest, which began on Feb 1, will conclude on Friday, April 7,” said Joseph Javier, DEQ environmental technician and coordinator for the contest.

Schools may recycle cardboard, magazines, office paper, notebook paper, newspaper, plastic (water) bottles, plastic (clean) detergent containers, and aluminum cans.

The recycling contest is one of the many activities conducted as part of DEQ’s 23rd Annual Environmental Awareness celebration.

According to Javier, “cash prizes will be awarded to the top three schools for their overall recycling effort. $400 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.” The award will take place on April 20th.

Last year’s competition yielded a combined weight of 15,067 pounds of recycled materials. 1st place went to Grace Christian Academy followed by San Antonio Elementary School and GTC Elementary School for 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
