There was a lot of quacking going on Saturday noon over at Garapan Elementary School as the GES Mallards swept the 2006 DFS Cup Elementary School Soccer Tournament.

The girls kicked off the Mallards’ championship celebrations shortly before 12pm as they nipped Koblerville Elementary School in the finals, 1-0, on a goal by Bernie Borja.

The boys had their turn in the spotlight an hour or so later when they edged Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School with the same score on a kick by Rodney Sacramento.

Both teams’ players whooped up at centerfield after their one-goal wins and hammed it up for the camera during the short but sweet awards ceremony following the title matches.

Aside from Borja, the GES elementary girls soccer team include Deveney Dela Cruz, Ann Margret Pua, Jamie Teregeyo, Irishdale Radam, Emily Palacios, MaryLyn Waing, Mia Renguul, Nikissa Castro, Shannah Babauta, Britney McConnell, Mary Ann Mancao. Luisalyn Doone, and Jenael Lucero.

Joining Sacramento in the boys soccer team, meanwhile, were Richard Lacanlale, Robert Lacanlale, Atan Atan, Jeffrey Sachuo, Michael Mancao, Mhark Apolinar, Marwin LeeMarvin, Mark Gonzales, Paul Manicad, Jay Nakayama, YJ Nakayama, John Santy, Kevin Paerez, and Giovanni Rios.

Sacramento and Teregeyo took tournament MVPs after leading their teams to the championship.

The GES girls lost only to GTC in the preliminaries and their record was 5-1-0, while the GES boys did not lose a game in the preliminaries or the championships. Their overall record was 6-0-2, obviously an offshoot of the team practicing since October.

In the battle for third, the girls of Kagman Elementary School defeated Tanapag Elementary School, 1-0, in overtime on a goal scored by Victoria Reyes.

TES girls had defeated KagES in the preliminary rounds allowing them to be the No. 1 seed from their pool, but KagES defeated them when it mattered most to capture second runner-up honors.

Dan Dan Elementary School won third place for the boys after it defeated Grace Christian Academy in overtime, 2-1, on goals by Michael Fitial and Vicente Cepeda. Dae Min Jeon scored the lone goal for GCA.

GCA boys outscored all teams in the preliminaries, but only managed one goal in the championships, going home empty handed.

In the playoffs earlier in the morning, GES girls advanced to the championship with a 3-0 win over KagES. Jaime Teregeyo (2) and Nikissa Castro (1) scored goals for GES. Teregeyo’s goals were a result of penalty kicks awarded to GES due to “hand ball” fouls by KagES in the penalty box.

KES, for its part, barged into the finals after beating TES, 1-0, on a goal scored by Richelle Mungwaith. Mungwaith scored a total of four goals for KES during the prelims and finals combined.

The GES boys kicked off its campaign in the playoffs with a 2-0 win over GCA on goals by Sacramento and Lancanlale.

GTC joined GES in the finals after slipping past DES, 1-0, in overtime on a goal by Levy Mario.

Over 200 students participated in this year’s DFS Cup and organizers, led by coordinator Dale Roberts, extended their heartfelt thanks to Marian Aldan-Pierce at Duty Free Shoppers “for once again sponsoring the awards.”

Roberts and company also thanked all volunteer referees—namely Perry Lo, Vince Riley, Paul Baron, Mr Eun, Martin Dalsaso—who officiated a total 67 games in the preliminary and championship rounds.

In the preliminary round for the boys, DES emerged the winner of Group A with GCA finishing second. Other teams in the group were KagES, TES, and San Vicente Elementary School.

GES won Group B with GTC right on their heels in second. Other teams in Group B were William S. Reyes Elementary School, Whispering Palms Elementary School, KES, and San Antonio Elementary Schools.

In the girls division, GES won Group A with Koblerville right behind them in second. Other teams in the group were GCA, San Antonio ES, and GTC ES.

TES, meanwhile, won Group B and KagES was the runner up. Other teams in the group were WSR, San Vicente, and DES.

Roberts earlier said that this year was the largest PSS-All School’s Soccer Tournament to date based on the number of schools participating.

Because of the number of teams, preliminary games were held at both American Memorial Park and Garapan Elementary School.
