Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has nominated former congresswoman Maria “Malua” T. Peter to the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents.

Peter was appointed in lieu of former NMC president Agnes McPhetres, who had declined the governor’s nomination.

If confirmed, Peter would represent Saipan and the women sector. She would replace former NMC regent Abelina C. Cabrera, whose term expired on Nov. 14, 2005. She will serve a four-year term.

The governor said that, because the terms of NMC regents are staggered, Peter’s term would expire on Nov. 14, 2009.

“The lieutenant governor and I are confident that Ms. Peter is qualified and will be an asset on this important board of regents,” Fitial told the Senate in a nomination letter.

Peter was a member of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2002. She also served as the governor’s special assistant for women’s affairs from 1992 to 1993. She was employed by two banks before she joined the U.S. Postal Service, where she worked for 13 years.

Fitial initially nominated McPhetres to the NMC post. But McPhetres declined the appointment due to a possible conflict of interest. She is currently working with the University of Hawaii on several academic projects to raise education standards in the Commonwealth.

Other new members sitting on the NMC Board of Regents include Saipan Chamber of Commerce president and Pacific Trading Corp. general manager Charles Cepeda, retiring Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos, and Linsa F. Lizama.
