The Department of Public Safety is fielding at least 35 police officers and emergency medical technicians to ensure safety and order in today’s annual Good Friday trek to Mt. Tapochao.

DPS spokesman Ken Concepcion said that, as early as 3am today, 25 patrol and traffic officers would be deployed to assist people hiking to the peak of Mt. Tapochao and those joining in the carrying of the cross from Mt. Carmel Cathedral to the top of the mountain.

Ten medical technicians will also be deployed. One group will be stationed at the foot of the mountain, while the other group will be assigned at the peak, Concepcion said.

In addition, a small medics vehicle will be at the mountain to offer emergency services, the spokesman said.

He said police officers would be escorting the carrying of the wooden cross from Mt. Carmel Cathedral to Mt. Tapochao’s summit.

Except for residents in the area, no motorists will be allowed to proceed to the gravel road leading to the peak. Police will put up a monitoring entrance at the foot where they will provide passes for vehicles.

Concepcion said those permitted to use vehicles are the bishop, priests, the elderly, and dignitaries.

Hundreds are expected to participate in today’s hike to Mt. Tapochao as part of the Roman Catholics’ Lenten observance of Good Friday.
