Cop in X’mas Eve assault gets 20-day prison term
A police officer accused of beating up his wife and another woman in two separate incidents on Christmas Eve of 2004 was ordered to spend 17 days in prison starting yesterday afternoon.
Superior Court Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama on Wednesday sentenced Police Officer 1 Juan R. Limes to one year in prison, all suspended except for 20 days, for assault and battery.
Following a plea agreement, Lizama gave the 35-year-old Limes credit for the three days he had already served in jail.
Limes, who is currently placed under suspension, was directed to report to the Department of Corrections yesterday at 5pm to start serving the 17 days of unsuspended sentence.
The judge placed the officer on one year of supervised probation and required him to pay a $1,000 fine, $25 in court assessment fee plus probation fee.
The defendant was also directed to perform 100 hours of community work service and undergo counseling evaluation at the Community Guidance Center.
“Defendant shall not consume alcohol for the entire term of his probation,” Lizama said.
A review hearing was set for Feb. 15, 2007 at 1:30pm.
Limes and counsel Stephanie Flores signed a plea agreement with the government represented by special prosecutor Colin M. Thompson. The defendant pleaded guilty to assault and battery. The other charges were dismissed.
Police said the first incident happened at Club Taboo in Garapan. Limes, who was then an off-duty detective, got into an argument with his wife over his missing keys. The defendant assaulted his wife while in their car at the parking lot of Club Taboo, police said.
As they were heading home, Limes accused his wife of seeing someone and started beating her up again. He dropped the wife at home and left.
Later, Limes repeatedly punched and kicked the second victim outside Don’s Sports Bar in Garapan.
Two police officers tried to stop Limes, but the latter struggled. The two responding police officers got kicked too, court papers said.
