Guam fighters to see action in Trench Warz III
Shortly after Saipan’s “Suicide” Cliff Masga and Frank “The Crank” Camacho returned home from successful fights in the Spike 22 Scrap Night on Guam, word spread that Trench Warz III: Commotion will include guest fighters looking to show their stuff to the Saipan crowd.
Trench Tech-Purebred Saipan Gym owner Cuki Alvarez disclosed yesterday that while on Guam to support as corner-man for Masga and Camacho, he also worked with Guam officials in attracting fighters for the third installment of Trench Warz.
Alvarez said that so far, two fighters from Guam have confirmed challenging Saipan fighters.
“There’s this guy, Billy, who is about 115 lbs and he will come and fight either street fighter Ken Taitano or Arthur Reyes of Trench Tech,” Alvarez said. “The other fighter is Japanese and he weighs about 145 lbs, and he’ll be taking on Trench Tech’s Giovanni Sablan.”
Alvarez said both Guam fighters are of the Spike 22 family, a sister-school to Trench Tech.
Alvarez said interest from Guam is building after witnessing strong performances from Saipan fighters. Last year, Alvarez won in his amateur debut, and Kelvin Fitial also put up a good fight in Fury 5 earlier in the year.
As reported earlier, Camacho fought Shaun “The Ace” Mantanona of Spike 22 Yona Academy and defeated his opponent via referee stoppage in the third round.
It was a similar result for Masga, who took on Dave “The Hammer” Fernandez, also of Spike 22 Yona. Masga won the bout also by referee stoppage in the third round.
Trench Warz III: Commotion will be held on May 27 at the Trench Tech Gym behind Moylans Insurance in Garapan.
According to Alvarez, tickets for the event will be sold for $20 instead of the usual $15.
“We’re trying to help out for the Micro Games,” Alvarez said. “The reason why we raised the price is because part of that will be contributed to the CNMI wrestling team headed by our coach Joe Ocampo.”
Proceeds from all beverages and food sold during the event will be donated to the Micronesian Games Organizing Committee.
Fighters willing to showcase their mix martial arts skills can still sign up and put their skills and toughness to the test. Deadline to sign up is May 20.
The featured fights will be boxing, submission wrestling, no-hold-barred and full contact matches, which could go up to more than 16 contests.
