The Pacific Regional Initiatives for the Delivery of basic Education Project seeks to enhance student learning in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, and 12 other Pacific nations by supporting the development of national educational plans.

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning has supported this project by contributing to the development of the plans for the RMI and Palau. The multiyear project is funded by the European Union and the New Zealand Agency for International Development and is implemented by the Institute of Education at the University of the South Pacific.

A workshop in Tonga in May, the fifth in a series of regional workshops held by the project, will discuss literacy (both English and vernacular) and numeracy and how they are conceptualized and practiced throughout the region. Representatives from American Samoa have been invited to participate in the workshop, and PREL staff members will make presentations.

PREL is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves the educational community in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific islands, the continental United States, and countries throughout the world. PREL bridges the gap between research, theory, and practice in education and works collaboratively with schools and school systems to provide services that range from curriculum development to assessment and evaluation.
