The 2006 Liberation Day Committee presented five of the seven candidates vying for this year’s Liberation Day Queen and Royal Court.

This year’s hopefuls are made up of first-time candidates from Tinian, Rota, and Saipan.

The five that showed up during Friday’s pinning and presentation of candidates were Reyina Kay King Aldan from Tinian and Consuelo Toves Cruz from Rota, while Saipan candidates are Ann Margaret Cruz, Emelaine Rose Dereas Fejeran, and Celing Leilany Castro Fogata.

Fin Chuuk Association will hold its own pageant to determine who will represent their association in the Liberation Day festivities. Not present during Friday’s presentation was Serene Maratita from Saipan.

The five candidates were presented at the façade of the Nauru Building in Susupe. Saipan Mayor Juan Tudela said the presentation was held in the Susupe landmark because it is where Camp Susupe used to be located. Tudela said the celebration this year marks the 60th anniversary of the camp’s liberation after the war. Tudela thanked this year’s supporters.

Aldan, 16, said the reason why she joined the event is to represent the beautiful island of Tinian “by meeting new people and have lots of fun. Consuelo Cruz, 17, said the reason why she joined the group is to make Rota more popular to the CNMI. She said, “To show that even a small island people can still rise.”

The 2006 Liberation Festivities will be held from June 3 to July 9 at the Garapan Fishing Base. According to the committee interested vendors for the festivities could sign up for booths at the Saipan Mayor’s Office. Booth fees are $1,200 for food and alcohol, $1,000 for food and $900 for games.

The committee is also looking for past Liberation Day queens, marshals, and “war babies” to contact Kathy from the Saipan Mayor’s Office at 234-6280 for their current contact numbers. They will be honored during the celebration.
