It takes a lot of heart and hard work to lead a team to a championship, and right before the weekend started, two young guns were able to accomplish the feat.

For their efforts in leading their teams to supremacy Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in the recently concluded 2006 Private School Basketball League, James Camacho of the Grace Christian Academy Eagles and Melissa Halaby of the Saipan International School Lady Geckos were crowned as most valuable players.

Camacho was the go-to-guy for the Eagles and came up with clutch baskets down the stretch to lead GCA to a 57-52 victory over a determined Mt. Carmel School Knights squad.

Camacho finished with a game-high 21 points, including nine markers on baseline drives and jumpers in the final period of play that enabled his team to survive.

As the MVP, Camacho was also named to the All Conference Team, which also includes teammate Juan Camacho, Knights guard Ki Tae Kim, Chang Gi of SIS, Justin Alexander of Calvary Christian Academy, Christopher Lee of third place Northern Marianas Academy, and Kant Lam of Marianas Baptist Academy.

Meanwhile, Halaby was sensational in the Lady Geckos’ championship game 41-21 victory over the Lady Knights.

Known for her performances in beach volleyball, the multi-sport athlete finished the game as the top scorer with 16 points, seven coming in the final quarter.

Joining Halaby in the All Conference Team are teammate Taylor Smith, Priscilla Norman of Calvary Christian, Noelle Calvo of the Lady Knights, and Trishia Catalla of Grace Christian Academy.

According to league coordinator Scott Norman, the all-star teams will face the coaching staff in their respective divisions this Tuesday at the Calvary Christian Academy court. All stars from both varsity and junior varsity will be combined to form one team in each division.

Norman said the action kicks off with the girl’s all-star game at 2:30pm. The boys’ bout follows immediately after the conclusion of the girls’ game.
