Aon Insurance tennis in stretch run

The inaugural Aon Insurance Tennis Tournament is winding down with doubles and mixed doubles concluding a few of its semifinal and quarterfinal matches Saturday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

In the men’s 4.5, the duo of Nanding Cajigan and Buddy Garote barged into the semifinals after outlasting Lito Cabrera and Hector Benitez, 7-5, 6-2.

Gannover Rettin and Tony Santos also made it to the Final Four of the men’s 4.0 following their hard-earned 6-4, 6-4 over Xiao Ming and Romy Sotto.

Benitez and Renato “Dodong” Espanola are in the same boat as Rettin and Santos after they ended Chuck Sayon and John Johnson’s championship aspirations with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph.

Rodel Macasinag and Romy Espeleta likewise advanced to the semis of the men’s 3.0 following their 7-5, 6-2 Francis Mangsat and Orly De Leon.

Joining them is the pair of Ramon Angeles and Babu Malayil who beat Dennis Tababa and Dillon Lee in a score of 6-0, 6-3.

Vener Urena and Romy Pandoro, meanwhile, barged into the finals of the men’s 2.0 following their 6-3, 6-7 (3-6), 6-2 conquest of youthful netters Christian Miller and Bryan Baron.

In the lone match in the women’s 4.0, Merle Hudkins and Thea Minor had their groove on and went on to beat Rose Pederson and Cecil Obaldo, 6-1/6-2. The win assured Hudkins and Minor a slot in the finals.

It was also a straight sets win for the husband-and-wife team of Dodong and Vangie Espanola as they defeated Garote and Pederson, 6-2, 6-2, to gain entry into the semis of the mixed 4.0.
