No entry notice at DPS commissioner’s office
A notice of no entry was posted yesterday morning at the door of the Department of Public Safety commissioner’s office.
The notice, dated April 30, 2006, was prepared by acting DPS commissioner Ray Mafnas, who is currently Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s senior policy adviser.
The message read: “Absolutely no entry is permitted into this office or workstation effective April 30, 2006.”
“An authorized representative from the Office of Governor will be available Monday morning May 1, 2006, at which time a walk-through within the office of the Commissioner will be conducted to allow Mr. [Ernest Mark] Williams to gather and take possession of his personal belongings,” the notice further stated.
Some DPS staff told Saipan Tribune that Mafnas opened the commissioner’s office shortly before noon yesterday.
The acting commissioner learned that Williams had already cleared the office of his belongings, staff members said.
A DPS employee said Williams probably packed up his things Friday night or during the weekend after Fitial terminated him as DPS commissioner.
Fitial and Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez explained that their decision to terminate Williams Friday “was made in the best interests of DPS and for the sake of public safety.”
Fitial and Villagomez, through press secretary Charles Reyes, cited that Williams failed to establish a good working relationship with his subordinates, including the key command officers in the department.
Reyes said the administration will seek a replacement for the position.
Williams was just confirmed by the Senate on March 14. It is not clear yet whether he is still in the CNMI.
