Eight doubles and mixed doubles teams advanced to the championship round of the inaugural Aon Insurance Tennis Tournament after hurdling their respective semifinal assignments Monday evening at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Singles opponents-turned doubles partners Nanding Cajigan and Buddy Garote earned the right to face Roy Pangelinan and Dino Jones in the men’s 4.5 division finals after they outlasted the pair of Ronnie Lacbayo and Tony Santos, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

Ricky Castro and Ruben Leynes also were successful in their Final Four foray as they booked a place in the championship round despite dropping the first set against Rodel Macasinag and Romy Espeleta, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Joining them in the finals is the tandem of Art Lopez and Mar Buensuceso who waylaid Henry Poon and Jang Dong-In, 6-0, 6-3.

Bobby Nato and Ramon Angeles, meanwhile, needed three sets to eliminate Thomas and Joel Joab in their semis match-up, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Over in the mixed open category, Peter Loyola and Cleofe Santos took out Ji Hoon Heo and Sally Wong, 6-3, 6-4, as Loyola gained a measure of revenge against Heo, who beat him in the men’s open finals last week.

Their opponents in the finals will be Pangelinan and Young Son, who fashioned out a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lope Padilla and Rose Pedersen.

The husband-and-wife team of Renato “Dodong” and Vangie Espanola continued to play beautiful music together as they advanced to the finals of the mixed 4.0 following a marathon 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over Feel Kalen and Letty Jones.

The same was true for the pair of Dr. Gary and Karen Ramsey, as they upended Babu Malayil and Lenny Titer in three hard-fought sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, in the mixed 3.0.
