The architecture and structural engineering design for phase one of the $12 million Cross Island Project is already completed, according to Department of Public Works Secretary Jose S. Demapan Wednesday.

Demapan, in an interview with the Saipan Tribune, said the project might start early as Henry K. Pangelinan Engineering Co. finished the design for phase 1 of the back road construction project.

“Now we are working on the construction side…doing all the proper documentation to have it bid out to start the construction of the project,” Demapan said.

The secretary expected another two months to prepare all the requests for proposal announcement or bidding for the contractors.

Demapan said the construction is hoped to pump the local economy.

With the project, DPW expects an increase of economic growth in the CNMI as not only residents would benefit from the road but also tourists, considering there are scenic sites in that location.

Under the federally-funded Cross-Island Project, a three-lane highway will be constructed from San Vicente round house all the way up to Capitol Hill.

Phase 1 involves building the road from San Vicente round house up to the Blue Tank in Papago. There would be two lanes going up and one lane going down.
