The Pilipino Contract Workers Association, or PILCOWA INC., in collaboration with the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, recently conducted a cleanup drive under the Chamber’s Trash for Cash program.

The cleanup drive was held at the beachside of Hotel Nikko all the way to Paopao beach on May 21, 2006, from 7am to 1pm.

Some 50 members participated in the cleanup.

“The group managed to collect around 100 bags of trash composed of dry leaves and garbage. Our goal is to do the cleanup drive every last Sunday of the month,” according to Eli Mindanao, the group’s chairman on Community Service.

This is the first project of the organization under the administration of association president Ronnie Doca.

“We are on-call to residents if they want us to do a cleanup. They can call us at 234-3165 or 287-4390,” said Mindanao.

He thanked those who sponsored the cleanup, including the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, Parks and Recreation’s Tony Benavente and staff, DPW Secretary Jose S. Demapan and staff, and J.G. Sablan Ice and Water for the ice and water.

“We encourage other Filipino workers to join our organization for a cause and we are encouraging sponsors to support us in our cleanup efforts through donations of such items such as rakes, trash bags, etc.,” Mindanao said.

The organization was formed on April 6, 2006, with around 90 members.
