Power Plant 4 runs out of fuel
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. failed to make a timely payment for fuel, resulting in many villages on Saipan plunging into darkness starting at 5pm yesterday.
CUC spokeswoman Pamela Mathis said yesterday that CUC acting director Anthony C. Guerrero has assured the public that delivery of fuel will take place either tonight or today.
Mathis quoted Guerrero as saying that normal power services will resume today.
“Our collection is very low,” she explained.
Mathis said Guerrero issued a check to purchase fuel from Mobil yesterday afternoon for Power Plant 4.
Power Plant 4 is a small engine located along Middle Road in Puerto Rico. It has no storage room so delivery of fuel there is frequent, according to the CUC spokeswoman.
Mathis said Guerrero cut the check, but under its process Mobil has to send the check to Guam for credit approval.
As a result, she explained, the delivery of fuel was not made as of 5pm yesterday, prompting CUC to implement load shedding.
Mathis said that from 5pm to 7pm, power outages affected San Jose, Chalan Kiya, Chalan Kanoa, and Susupe.
From 7pm to 9pm, the power shedding will be switched to As Lito, Koblerville, San Antonio, Afetnas, Chalan Piao, Fina Sisu, postal area in Chalan Kanoa, and parts of As Perdido.
Finally from 9pm to 11pm, affected areas will be Lower Base, Tanapag, San Roque, and As Matuis, Mathis added.
From Saturday to Monday, power outages hit many areas on the island due to an old transformer blowing out, a broken power pole’s cross arm, cylinder problem, and engine overheating.
