NMI backs resolution of N. Korea issue
The CNMI has backed efforts led by the U.S. government to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons through “peaceful” means, saying that dragging out the issue may compromise security in the region.
In a statement issued yesterday, acting Gov. Timothy Villagomez said that North Korea’s reported nuclear test this month is a concern of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the United States and its allies, and the world.
“We support a swift and judicious resolution to this matter for the good of the citizens of all involved countries,” Villagomez said.
Under the Covenant to establish the CNMI in political union with the United States, the U.S. has complete responsibility for and authority with respect to matters relating to foreign affairs and defense affecting the Northern Mariana Islands.
“In that regard, the CNMI supports the United States, its six party partners and the United Nations in seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means,” Villagomez said. “Prolonging that resolution may result in the compromise of peace and security in our region, as well as economic repercussions that the people of the CNMI can ill-afford at this time.” [B][I](PR)
