The Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition, in collaboration with Diabetes Prevention and Control, will launch a pilot project called “Diabetes and You” Program this Saturday.

The free training will be held at the Northern Marianas College Room D1 from 9am to 10am and 10:30am to11:30am on Oct. 28.

CDC member and advocate Robert T. Torres said interested individuals from public and private schools, as well members of the community, are encouraged to attend this training, which will be on a first-come first-served basis.

“Diabetes is a deadly and extremely costly disease that affects one in four indigenous person 40 years and older,” said Torres.

Torres said the training has been approved by the Communicable Disease and Control program of the federal government. He added that this program has also been implemented in Hawaii and is also being mulled in Guam.

“Education is as much about building character as it is about developing specific skills about coping with this deadly disease. We are committed to helping our children develop the capacity to accept responsibility for their own actions and exercise judgment in health and lifestyles issues,” said Torres.

“Diabetes and You” is a curriculum that is now being taught to 4th and 5th grade students in Hawaii to help address the prevention and control of Type 2 diabetes through nutrition and physical activity.

The curriculum will consist of two interactive 50-minute presentations. The curriculum aims to: understand what diabetes is and the symptoms, risk factors and complications associated with this disease; lead students through a process that enables them to distinguish between those factors they can and cannot control; and, get commitment of the students to prevent and delay the onset or minimize the effects of Type 2 diabetes by changing their lifestyle and eating habits.
