Department of Public Safety commissioner Rebecca Warfield has removed Greg Castro as director of police, the Saipan Tribune learned yesterday.

Warfield appointed patrol/traffic commander Capt. Pete Leon Guerrero as acting police director.

It was not clear yet why Castro was replaced.

Saipan Tribune tried to reach Warfield for comment, but she has been on sick leave since Monday.

Effective last Monday, Castro was transferred to the Department of Corrections as director of Corrections.

John Ayuyu, the acting director of Corrections, is now the assistant chief of Corrections, sources at DPS and DOC said.

Castro, however, did not report to work yesterday.

Sources said Castro was “very upset.” He could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Castro used to be the director of DOC, then at the DPS Bureau of Motor Vehicle. Early this year, he was transferred to the training division and was later appointed director of police.

Sources said another major reshuffle among key police officials may be expected at DPS by next week.

Reshuffle has been a sensitive issue at DPS. It was said to be one of the primary reasons that led to the termination of Ernest Williams as DPS commissioner.

In an earlier interview, Warfield said changes will occur in the department.

“However, I don’t believe in making any change unless it has a purpose. And it can’t have a purpose unless we have clear goals,” the commissioner said.
