CHALAN PAGO, Guam—Members and volunteers of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam will be cleaning and painting the wall outside of the Mangilao Mayor’s Office on Oct. 28, from 8am to noon.

Volunteers will paint the left side of the wall, which borders the basketball court. The wall was last painted in 2002.

The purpose of the community-outreach project is two-fold. Oct. 28 is Make A Difference Day, a national day of service aimed at mobilizing members of the community to help one another. According to Erika Vaughan, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam, it is an opportunity to make a meaningful, visible impact in the community.

“It’s a way for us to engage the community in volunteerism, and to encourage our ‘Littles’ to get involved in doing something positive for other people”, Vaughan said.

The Make A Difference Day painting project is also an opportunity to increase public awareness about Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs. The Mangilao mayor’s office is home to a BBBSG after-school program, which resumes Nov. 8. Children between the ages of 8 and 12 are eligible to participate by calling 472-2227 to enroll.

The right end of the wall received a fresh coat of paint earlier this year, which made the chipped, peeling mural on the left end very noticeable. Social work students from the UOG SW110 Community Services class spent the past weekend prepping the wall for the Make A Difference Day project. Volunteers, including Bigs and Littles will finish painting the wall on Oct. 28.

The Mangilao mayor’s office and Benson will be supporting the event by donating supplies and refreshments. Community volunteers are invited to participate.

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam is to provide quality volunteer and professional mentoring services for children and youth and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become responsible men and women. (PR)
