Hunting tourism proposed for Rota
A lawmaker wants Rota to be developed as a hunting destination.
According to Rota Rep. Crispin M. Ogo, the current center of eco-tourism in the Commonwealth has great potential to become a destination for trophy hunters.
“There are trophy hunters from Europe who are willing to pay $10,000 each to the CNMI government for permission to go hunting in Rota,” Ogo said. “We need that funding.”
He added that the CNMI could design the law to require that a minimum $5,000 of the hunter fee be set aside for local conservation efforts.
Ogo is poised to introduce a House resolution asking the Division of Fish and Wildlife to promulgate rules and regulations to allow trophy hunting within the conservation areas on Rota and to establish hunting fees.
The draft resolution notes that the estimated 6.2 million European hunters spend thousands of dollars to travel abroad and hunt at least occasionally.
Hunting agencies cater to these hunters by offering different types of trips to Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America to hunt a wide variety of animals, including deer, moose, antelope, wild boar, bear, wolf, and birds.
