Community forum on probate set
The NMI Council for the Humanities is inviting the public to a community panel discussion called “Probate: Partida, Mwe-Mwei, Testamento and Patte-Parehu: What is Probate? Why Do We Have It? And How Does It Work?” that will be held on Thursday evening, Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 8pm, at the American Memorial Park Visitors Center.
Many people in the Commonwealth are not aware of the probate laws or what they mean until months after a family member or loved one has passed away. The laws and rules are often strange or foreign to community members. On top of that, Western legal rules in probate proceedings are balanced by the courts with local cultural traditions such as partida, mwei-mwei, testamento and patte parehu. Recent cases have illustrated the difficulties that arise in the administration of an estate and the issues that exist in a probate case.
The purpose of the discussion is to inform the community about legal issues surrounding probate, how culture and the community are affected by the law, and how the community can be informed about probate proceedings so that it may make decisions based on an understanding of the law and relation to the community.
The discussion will be moderated by Lillian A. Tenorio and members of the audience will be invited to interact with panel members. Panelists include former Supreme Court Justice and Lt. Gov. Jesus C. Borja, Lorenzo DLG. Cabrera, Lino M. Olopai, Jane Mack and former representative Malua T. Peter.
The program is a part of the council’s continuing Law and the Community Forum series. Interested individuals are invited to contact Council staff at 235-4785 for additional details. (PR)
