After powering his team to victory in the Private Schools Varsity Indoor Volleyball Tournament’s championship games, Grace Christian Academy’s Jose Mafnas was named by the coaches as the most valuable player.

Mafnas was a part of every play. When he wasn’t hammering his opponents with spikes, Mafnas called the shots and coordinated his teammates’ movement on the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium floor.

Even before his name was announced, the Eagles knew their captain was a sure bet for the top honors and they began clapping right away when Mafnas received his trophy from league coordinator Scott Norman in front of a packed bleacher section.

Mafnas earned a spot on the varsity all-star team and he will take the court with Andrew Kakuse of Calvary Christian Academy, Mount Carmel School’s Carlo Mangloña, Saipan International School’s Melisa Halaby and Henry Chan, Wilbert Fejeran of Marianas Baptist Academy, Kei Yoshida of the Seventh Day Adventist School, and fellow Eagle Abraham Sandig.

There is still one more 6-on-6 challenge ahead for the students as the top players from the Varsity and Junior Varsity squads will square off against their coaches next Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Calvary Christian Academy at 3:30pm.

Junior varsity MVP Amber Roberts earned a slot on the all-star team along with Zelena Palijo of Calvary Christian Academy, Hunter Thorpe of Whispering Palms School, Mount Carmel’s Joshua Roberto, towering Melvin Kim of Saipan Community School, Savana Mangloña of Marianas Baptist Academy, Seventh Day Adventist’s Kono Remelik, Brandon Chargulaf of Grace Christian Academy, and Gecko Jellian Majors of Saipan International School.
