The runners of Tinian Junior High School returned home with pride and a shiny hardware after the boys team topped the 12-14 age category in the 2006 All Schools Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

Ken Mojica, Benjie Decena, Joe Manglona, Efrain Palacios, and William Manglona were strong as a team, and Tinian was the only school to come up with five runners, thus, making it easy for the group to top the team competition.

Mojica led the group of neighbors from the south as he placed second overall in the individual competition with a time of 18:03.

Decena, who normally makes headlines on the tennis court, was also solid as he completed the challenge in 19:12 to finish in fourth place, while Joe Manglona and Palacios followed with times of 19:18 and 20:16. William Manglona completed Tinian’s push with a time of 20:51.

For his part, Hunter Thorpe of Whispering Palms School won first place in the individual competition as he clocked in at a sterling 17:21.

Chacha Oceanview Junior High School’s Douglas Dillay placed third in 18:34, while Whispering Palms’ Bradley Brostrom rounded up the group in 21:14.

In the girls’ corner, Grace Christian Academy’s Lia Rangamar was able to take top honors as she crossed the finish line in 21:36.

Rangamar and close friend Reylyn Sapong of Hopwood Junior High School were together throughout the race, with Sapong finishing just a second behind in 21:37, while teammate Lina Manalili took third place in 22:04.

For her part, Madison Schultz represented well for Whipsering Palms School as she finished fourth in 26:12.

The Championships served as the finale for the 2006 All Schools Cross Country Series. The Series featured three tune-up races—two held on Saipan and the other on Tinian.

The event was organized by Northern Marianas Athletics and sponsored by UMDA.

The event also included competitions in the 9-and-under, 12-and-under, and 18-and-under age groups.
