Detonation operations in Marpi on Saturday
The Marpi area will be closed off to the public on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, from 11:30am to 2:30pm, for the detonation operation that will be jointly conducted by the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management Office and the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit.
The U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment Team from Guam will detonate World War II live ordnance at the Laderan Laggun Cliff Line of Marpi, about a mile north of the Marpi landfill. The grid coordinates is 15 degrees 16.11 minutes 0.0865 seconds North and 145 degrees 49 minutes 0.3313 seconds East and 5,000 feet above sea level.
“The general public, especially tour operators, dive operators, farmers, joggers, and bikers,” are cautioned to stay at least one mile away from this area during the time and date indicated,” the EMO said in a statement.
The only area that will not be closed off will be Suicide Cliff as that will be the main viewing point for the detonation. General public access to Suicide Cliff will be allowed only at the road leading up to the Far East Broadcasting antenna into Suicide Cliff for viewing purposes.
The Department of Public Safety will be setting up security posts to enforce and control traffic movement for safety purposes.
