The CNMI government yesterday auctioned off a second batch of public vehicles, raising approximately $7,000 from the sale.

Fifteen individuals submitted offers for 10 of the cars put to bid. Only nine of the vehicles were sold, as some bids were deemed invalid.

The highest priced car to be purchased was a 2000 Ford Focus sedan, sold at one dollar more than the $3,000 minimum bid price. Also purchased were a 1997 Hyundai Sonata for $877, a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage for $750, and a 1997 Hyundai Accent for $702.

A 1995 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a 1992 Toyota Camry were among the lowest priced items, sold at $250 or less.

There were originally 15 cars up for bid, but acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez withdrew four from the auction block so that the Rota government could use them.

Danny Buniag, the governor’s special assistant for special projects, said that another batch of government vehicles would be auctioned off next month. It will be the third government car sale.

The first auction was held Aug. 11, 2006, raising a total of $18,772.

Press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said that the sale of the cars does not only raise funds for the government, but more importantly, reduces maintenance and fuel expenses.

Melinda Takai, supply specialist at the Division of Procurement and Supply, said that plans are also underway to sell not only public vehicles, but also computers and furniture. [I][B](Agnes E. Donato)
