On Doggie Hilton Resort

I would like to thank Mr. Bruce Bateman for his “Sour Grapes” column in your Dec. 12 issue for supporting our efforts in trying to implement Saipan’s stray dog control program, and the Legislature’s help in financing the effort. If you have ever looked closely at the old piggery at the Agricultural Station in As Perdido, you will see much renovation must be completed, including a new roof, septic tank, holding areas, and separate front gate access road, before we have a suitable and safe animal shelter to hold stray dogs during the required 72-hour impoundment period.

Rest assured, these stray dogs won’t be enjoying any “Doggie Hilton Resort”-style amenities. I commend Mr. Bateman, however, for correctly targeting the real solution to our overpopulation of stray dogs by conducting a spay and neutering program. We are also examining such options to help ensure our program works for the benefit of all Saipan’s residents and visitors.
