Volunteer call-up for Christmas bird count
The 107th annual Audubon Christmas bird count is fast approaching and bird enthusiastic are needed to count birds!
The Christmas bird count is a tradition that occurs annually all over the world. For one day, from sunrise to sunset, during the month of December, birds are counted in every participating location. The Audubon Society compiles the bird census information and produces an annual report and summary that is sent to all volunteers. The Northern Mariana Islands has participated for over 10 years.
This year the Christmas Bird Count is a great opportunity to become more familiar with the native and migratory birds on the islands. Participants will conduct roadside and walking bird surveys. The bird count is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.
Experienced birders will be participating to share their bird identification skills and the Division of Fish and Wildlife also has a few identification books for groups to borrow during the count. Interested individuals can also purchase a simple field guide that includes the native birds and common migratory species at Bestseller, Fish and Tackle, Joeten (Susupe) and Coffee Care.
The Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saipan on Dec. 23, 2006, a Saturday. The counts will be led and organized by volunteers Marylin Swift and Randy Harper.
Participants should meet at the American Memorial Park parking lot at 6am sharp. The tides will be low on that day—a great day to observe the elusive wading birds.
Participants should bring water, paper, pencil, binoculars (optional), and a $5 participation fee. The participation fee covers the cost of compiling the data worldwide and the annual Christmas Bird Count publication, which all participants will receive.
