With the tough economic situation currently experienced by the Commonwealth, organizers of the Masters Basketball League decided to give teams a break with the entrance fee.

Teams were originally required to pay a $400 entrance fee. However, organizers disclosed that for teams that cannot pay the amount up front, another option is in line.

Instead of paying $400 before the start of the season, teams can pay $50 before each game they play.

Officials, however, indicated that the “No pay, no play” rule is still in effect, and team’s that take the $50 before game option must pay the amount. Failure to do so before the game will result in the team not playing.

The Masters League was scheduled to kick off last night with action in the 45-and-up division. Having the honors of kicking off the season were Tropical Storm and Kanoans, while LBT and NIC were scheduled to face off in the second game.

Action continues tomorrow night with teams in the 35-and-up division making their debuts. Scheduled to battle at 6:30pm are the Typhoons and Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense, while the Dinasores take on the Old Aces at 8pm.

Also, officials are reminding all players to submit age verification documents before playing in the league. Accepted are copies of passports, identification cards, or driver’s license.

In all, seven teams have confirmed competing in the 45-and-up division, and four in the 35-and-up division.

Joining Tropical Storm, Kanoans, LBT, and NIC in the 45-and-up division are the Old Aces, Northern Marianas College Proa, and the Dinasores.

League official Elias Rangamar indicated that two more teams may suit up in the league, and that he is just awaiting confirmation.

“We are still going on with the division while we await the other teams’ confirmation. If I don’t hear from them by Friday, then I will finalize the schedule,” he said.

Two games will be held every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
