Con-con? Not!

This is in response to the suggestion being made that since so many constitutional initiatives are being proposed, might as well call for a constitutional convention.

In the first place, not every initiative merits being put on the ballot. If the Legislature does its job well, far fewer will emerge as eligible for a vote by the public.

In the second place, opting for a con-con will delay things considerably—unless the initiatives are put on the same ballot—and that doesn’t make sense either. Some of the initiatives are calling for ways to address power woes, retirement woes, economic woes, and the sooner they are voted on, the better.

In the third place, a comprehensive change to the Constitution was proposed last time round, and it got nowhere. There’s no point in going through that exercise again.
