$30K for Rota students’ transfer
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has signed into law two bills appropriating poker fees collected on Rota and on Tinian.
Tinian Local Law 16-1 appropriates $98,000 to financial aid awarded by the Tinian Municipal Scholarship Board.
Rota Local Law 16-1 appropriates $149,000 from local poker license fees to different programs in the First Senatorial District.
The Rota appropriation is distributed as follows: $30,000 for the transfer of students from the Northern Marianas College Rota campus to the NMC campus on Saipan; $2,000 for the JROTC program; $5,000 for the Rota man’amko; $44,000 for dialysis or terminally ill patients from Rota who are receiving treatment on Saipan; $50,000 for the mayor’s trade mission; and $18,000 for the operations of the Rota legislative delegation.
“I have approved the various appropriations in this legislation as I believe that they are all beneficial to the needs of the people and island of Rota,” Fitial said in signing the Rota law.
The governor specifically mentioned the funds appropriated for the students who were affected by the suspension of NMC Rota academic programs. He added that the funds appropriated for the mayor’s trade mission and the legislative delegation “will continue working toward improving the Rota economy.”
Each senatorial district charges local poker fees, amounting to $6,000 per machine on Saipan and $4,000 on Rota and Tinian.
In addition, the CNMI government imposes a $6,000 fee for each poker machine operated in the Commonwealth.
