Roses to Rep. Justo S. Quitugua for his courage and concern to sponsor House Bill 16-47. The bill seeks to outlaw smoking in restaurants, bars and workplaces.

Roses to HANMI [Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands] for its support for the bill.

Roses to such places as ARC [Aqua Resort Club] for having banned smoking in its main dining room since April 1, 2007, despite being known as a place noted for catering to heavy-smoking Japanese tourists!

Roses to a very small number of locally run restaurants now willing and daring to pursue a similar ban.

Thorns to our current Governor and his Administration for continued foot-dragging and refusal to lead the way in banning smoking in public places. Shame on you, Mr. Governor!

Thorns to employers unwilling to promote smoking bans, thereby showing utter disregard for the health and safety of their employees and their patrons.

I am a two-time cancer survivor. Smokers have the right to ruin their own health with tobacco. But they have no right to inflict secondhand smoking harm to their family, friends and we the general public.

I invite others to join in boycotting any restaurant unwilling to go “Smoke Free.” If useful, I further invite others to join in picketing places unwilling to ban smoking in public areas.
