Nepaial-led quartet tops April Fools golf
Reigning Refaluwasch Golf Association Club Championship title-holder Andy Nepaial led his team in winning the coveted yellow Hawaiian jacket in the Inaugural Dan Hughes Memorial Tournament of Fools Golf Tournament last April 1 at the Laolao Bay Golf Course east course.
Nepaial, who won the 2007 season-ending RGA Cup in December last year, teamed up with Richard Pierce, Alex S. Sablan, and Dan Harding to win the tournament, which is held in memory of former Coffee Care owner Dan Hughes.
The quartet shot a low gross score of 59 but with the double Peoria format tournament earned them a final tally of 69.8.
Second place went to the team of Faye Crozat, Randy Feenel, Richard Jones, and Kazuyo Tojo with a low gross score of 64 and a net of 70.0.
The husband-and-wife tandems of Tim and Doy Brassuel and Greg and Ni Koebel ended up in third with a low gross score of 63 and a 70.2 net.
The foursome of Jeff Taylor, Mark Moss, Jim Gabhart, and Rick Kautz actually had the lowest low gross score with a 59 but finished with a 70.20 in the double Peoria format.
The trio of Brett Nelson, Laurant Weiner, and Saipan Chamber of Commerce president Jim Arenovski was the last place team to win the Grand Salami award.
They had the highest low gross score of 67 and a net 73 to literally win a 19-inch salami imported from the mainland.
Kautz and chief public defender Adam Hardwicke had the longest drives for the day, winning it in holes No. 18 and 9.
The closest to the pin winners were Mark Blackburn in hole No. 4, Taylor in hole No. 6, Arenovski in hole No. 11 and Doy Brassuel in hole No. 15.
It was the 11th edition of the Tournament of Fools but this year was a tribute to Hughes, who died in an accident last month in Thailand. The tournament was traditionally a customer appreciation event.
The Inaugural Dan Hughes Memorial Tournament of Fools Golf Tournament adopted a four-person best-ball format.
A dinner and awards banquet were held at Coffee Care in Capital Hill where participants and Hughes’ friends gathered to honor the longtime Saipan resident.
Hughes’ wife, Miya, of SeaShell Pink boutique, made the yellow Hawaiian jacket.
