SHRM awards Juanet Sablan with scholarship plum
Juanet Santos Sablan was awarded the Undergraduate Human Resources Scholarship by the Society for Human Resource Management – Hawaii Chapter on Monday, March 9, 2008, at the Hawaii Pacific University’s 25th Annual Honors Banquet.
The award was presented by Linda Kawamura, vice president of Human Resources and Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office for the HPU.
In her congratulatory message to Sablan, Kawamura said, “Congratulations to Juanet Sablan for winning the Hawaii Pacific University Undergraduate Human Resources Scholarship sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management Oahu Educational Foundation. Juanet is originally from Saipan and is currently a junior at HPU pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Development. She currently holds a GPA of 3.85 and is to be the 2008 President of the SHRM Lokahi Student Chapter at HPU. Congratulations to Juanet for earning this prestigious scholarship.”
Sablan was one of two HR honorees recognized and awarded that evening. Cheryl Hoang, the outgoing president of the SHRM Lokahi Student Chapter at HPU, received the Graduate HR Scholarship.
Witnessing the presentation of awards were Juanet’s grandparents, Nicolas and Hilaria Santos.
Sablan, also a member in the National Society for Human Resource Management, will be attending the 2008 SHRM Pacific West Regional Student Conference to be held at the California State University Long Beach on April 4-5, 2008, where she will receive her briefing as the new Student Chapter president. She will also have the opportunity to network with other HR students and HR professional as well as participate in the HRGames academic competition. Sablan garnered first place for HPU in the Hawaii HR Games.
Sablan, daughter of Nicolas D. and Maggie S. Sablan, graduated high school in 2005 as the salutatorian from Mount Carmel School. She was inspired to pursue her education in the Human Resources field by her mother, the HR Manager for Fiesta Resort Saipan, then the 2005 SHRM President for the CNMI Chapter; and her grandfather, Nick Baza Santos, whose life-career was in Personnel Management—over 30 years in Government Personnel and six years as the HR Manager for MTC and Verizon.
Sablan, now finishing her third year at HPU, was also inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, which recognizes and promotes superior scholarship and those elements of outstanding character among students. Membership to this Society is limited to 10 percent of the junior and senior classes and represents the highest academic honor on any member campus.
Sablan thanked the SHRM-CNMI Chapter Scholarship Committee and the Joeten Scholarship Foundation for their scholarship award in 2005. She also thanked the CNMI Scholarship and SHEFA offices for their continued advocacy for scholarship funds for students on-island and abroad.
