Winkfield is new NMSF president
Longtime Marianas High School physical education teacher and current Saipan Community School principal Bobby Winkfield is the new president of the Northern Marianas Swimming Federation.
Winkfield, who also used to serve as assistant coach for the Saipan Swim Club, replaces SCC founder Bill Sakovich as president of the umbrella organization of the sport of swimming in the CNMI.
Also appointed to positions in the NMSF were American Red Cross CNMI Chapter executive director John Hirsh as vice president, Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan president Stanley Good IV as secretary, and SSC president Michael Johnson as treasurer.
With only one swim club, the NMSF was essentially inactive the past several years. However, the birth of the Tsunami Saipan in March 2007 and the approval of its membership in NMSF by then NMSF president Sakovich, necessitated the appointment of officers and the creation of a board.
Winkfield said he is looking at filling the three other positions on the board in the near future.
Yesterday, Winkfield and SSC head coach Michael Stewart represented NMSF in the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association monthly meeting at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. The two nominated Rezne Wong and Sarah Johnson as Athlete of the Month for March and Kai Staal and Marystar Welch as Student Athlete of the Month.
Wong, Johnson, and Staal were nominated for their prowess in last month’s 30th Annual Saipan Ocean Swim and the SSC International Meet as well as their exploits as the swimmers in their respective relay teams in the XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman triathlons.
Welch, meanwhile, was given the nod for winning the girls’ 13-14 age group of the SSC International Meet.
