Off-island delegations join local arts festival
As Micronesia’s largest annual arts and culture celebration, the Flame Tree Arts Festival has attracted several off-island delegations from Guam, Tinian, Rota, and Palau to join the festival revelries on April 24-27, 2008.
At least 10 artists and craftspeople from Rota will provide on-site demonstrations, including herbal medicine presentation, salinas (sea salt) extraction, nengkanno’ natibu (native food), coconut oil extraction, galaide’ (Chamorro canoe) model making, pandanas weaving, wood carving, da’ok oil extraction, sea shell jewelry making, sand art painting, and gabgab (tacca) starch making.
The Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Council will be bringing a delegation of at least 50 artists, including a performing group, craftspeople, traditional/folk artists, and visual artists.
Tinian Taga Dancers are slated to perform at the festival and will be joined by an official delegation of 10 other artists from the neighboring island. Demonstrations by Tinian will include coconut frond weaving and seed jewelry making.
The Republic of Palau has confirmed to send representatives of the Palau Agency on Aging to sell handicrafts made by senior citizens.
“We’re very excited about the participation of our off-island guests at this year’s Flame Tree,” said Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture executive director Cecilia-Celes. “They are each bringing unique art forms and cultural practices to Saipan that will only enhance our celebration.”
The Flame Tree Arts Festival features live performances, artwork, and international cuisine. Booth registration for artists, non-profits, and information purposes will be open until April 17. The festival hours will be April 24 and April 25 from 6pm to 10pm, April 26 from 9am to 10pm, and April 27 from 9am to 11pm.
