Barja, Zapanta top April roll-offs

Kitz Barja and Gigi Zapanta won the April edition of the monthly Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament held last Sunday and Monday at the Capital Bowling Center in Garapan.

Barja won his first men’s monthly title of the year after the Micronesian Brokers, Inc. general manager put together a four-game series of 895 and 223.75 average last Monday.

He beat Day 1 leader Manuel Castro by book-ending pedestrian scores of 187 and 198 in the middle games with a 234 in the first and a tourney-high 276 in the fourth.

The Fairview, Quezon City, Philippines native pocketed $100 for his victory.

Dannie Robles finished second to Barja in the men’s division after he also leapfrogged Castro with a four-game series total of 847 and average of 211.75. He strung together games of 220, 178, 205, and 244.

Castro slipped down to third place after the 830-pinfall total and 207.5 average he logged Sunday were eclipsed by the onslaught of Barja and Robles Monday. The new bowling recruit from Grace Christian Academy had games of 197, 198, 216, and 219.

Lito Teodoro was good for fourth place after his 192, 177, 230, and 224 allowed him to finish with a total of 823 and an average of 205.75.

Robles, Castro, and Teodoro went home $50, $30, and $15 richer after their performances Sunday and Monday.

Zapanta, for her part, finally won the Queen of the Lanes tiara after coming close last month with a four-game series last Sunday of 722, good for an average of 180.5.

The affable wife of Saipan Bowling Association treasurer Ross Zapanta, knocked down 187, 195, 182, and 158 in Day 1 of the competition.

Ron Cal took second place with a total of 703 and an average of 175.75 (173, 194, 179, and 157), while Yho Villavicencio wound up third with her 701 and 175.25 numbers (190, 170, 172, an d 169.

Zapanta, who hails from Cavite, Philippines, earned $60 for her win, while Cal and Villavicencio bagged $40 and $20, respectively.

A total of 46 entries took part in the April King and Queen of the Lanes.

Last Sunday also at the Capital Bowling Center, Zack Cruz won the Bing Energy Drink Prince/Princess of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament after toppling 814 pins in four games for a 203.75 average.
