The Marianas High School JROTC prevailed against 36 other high school teams at the 13th Brigade Inaugural Academic Challenge Competition held recently.

MHS JROTC competed in the senior division, scoring 98 percent in the academic challenge test while the average score was 80 percent across the region.

They bested both private and public high school teams from the United States West Coast, American Samoa, Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska.

According to LTC Robert Gay, the JROTC Brigade Academic Challenge reflects the national competition created exclusively for JROTC cadets.

The participating cadets undergo a rigorous online testing exercise that evaluates their knowledge of several interdisciplinary subjects.

Topics include JROTC curriculum, military history, civics, current events, leadership, behavioral science, physical education, first aid, the U.S. Constitution, trivia and SAT related subject areas.

The cadets who participated took a 50-question timed exam where the team leader synthesizes the group’s collective knowledge and makes a decision within 30 seconds for each question.

The MHS JROTC was recognized Wednesday afternoon by MHS principal Karen Borja, in front of the high school assembly. She recognized and praised the accomplishments of the MHS JROTC program and academic team.
