A fire damaged a canoe that was placed behind the CNMI Museum in Garapan early Thursday morning.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said yesterday that no one was reported injured in the blaze that was contained at 4:10am.

Ogumoro said that, according to arson investigators, there were no obvious damage to the museum’s exterior.

She said the canoe sustained severe heat and smoke damage.

The DPS spokesperson said that police received a call about a structural fire Thursday at 3:29am and firefighters and medics were dispatched to the location.

Ogumoro said that further investigations revealed that someone had started a fire at the base of a dead tree, which stood next to the canoe in the museum’s compound.

The fire smoldered the core of the tree, causing it to collapse. The smoldering tree’s core made contact with the canoe, triggering the fire.

“The cause of the fire is known; however, this case is pending further investigation,” Ogumoro said.
