April is Library Month
The Public School System has declared April as Library Month.
Surrounded by public school librarians from several schools, the Board of Education led by vice chair Herman Atalig signed the proclamation last Friday morning at the Kanoa Resort Latte Room, just before announcing the 2019 Librarian of the Year awardee.
In a speech, Education Commissioner Glenn Muña noted that libraries are essential to a community. He described librarians as “the ultimate search engine of the CNMI.”
He said that libraries are loaded with not just information but also with projects pertaining to several improvements such as collection additions, more library programs, and an overall environment for learning.

“You’re better than Google,” he added. “…You guys are very resourceful despite the limited resources we have on island. You bring those resources to our children, and we thank you all for your hard work.”
BOE vice chair Herman Atalig also expressed gratitude to librarians.
“Thank you all for your dedication and commitment [in putting our] students first. Remember that you…are basically the information folks for our students in PSS,” he said.
“Libraries should be fun and I think it is fun,” he said, adding that librarians hardly get the spotlight for their efforts. “Today, we salute you and honor you, and you are part of the equation of our student’s achievements.”
Librarians from several PSS schools attended the proclamation signing, including representatives from Kagman Elementary School, William S. Reyes Middle School, Kagman High School, Marianas High School, and the Tinian Jr. Sr. High School.
