Tourists land 500-lb marlin
A group of tourists who went fishing was thrilled after unexpectedly catching a 500-lb marlin during a four-hour struggle a few miles off the coast of Garapan yesterday morning.
The boat’s captain, Steven Igisaiar, from Seahorse Marine Sports Company, said all of them were shouting for joy when they finally hauled in the six-foot fish into their fishing boat.
Igisaiar told Saipan Tribune that he and one crewmember, along with six tourists, had been trolling on board the company’s Olympic 21-footer fishing boat about three to four miles west of Fiesta Resort & Spa. The tourists were Yokohama Seven Co., Ltd.’s Atsushi Nakagawa (president), Kenji Ota, Takao Sakai, Yoshitaka Nakagawa, Akihiro Makino, and Tomonori Sasaki.
Igisaiar said he was the first one to see the marlin trying to catch the bait at 7:35am.
Igisaiar, the crewmember and one tourist helped each other reel in the line when the marlin was subsequently hooked.
They brought the fish to shore near Fiesta Resort, where about 50 local residents and tourists had their pictures taken with the monstrous fish.
“That’s my fish, I’m going to use it as sashimi,” said Igisaiar.
“This is the first time I’ve seen a big marlin since last year of August,” said local witness Ramon Dador.
