Manny Sitchon needs the community’s help and this coming June the veteran triathlete will hold a road and mountain bike race to help fundraise for his trip to Maui in October where he will compete in the 2008 XTERRA World Championships.

Dubbed the Manny to Maui Bike Race, the event will be in either June 22 or 29 and will start at Micro Beach inside the American Memorial Park.

According to Sitchon, both road and mountain bike participants will have a slow pace group start and head toward the AMP traffic light before turning north. Upon reaching the Saipan Ice and Water traffic light, a signal will be given to officially start the race.

Road bikers will head toward Suicide Cliff then down to Bird Island Lookout, Grotto, Banzai Cliff, and back to Micro Beach for the finish.

Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will head toward the Last Command Post in Marpi, turn left to Banzai Cliff, and back to Micro Beach for the end of the race.

Sitchon said cycling jerseys will be given away to all participants. He also promised that a raffle will be held at the conclusion of the race where in-kind donations will be given away to the lucky cyclists.

He said he is organizing the Manny to Maui Bike Race to help defray the costs of transportation and hotel accommodation during his stint in the 2008 XTERRA World Championships set for Oct. 26.

The XTERRA World Championship is limited to top 500 qualifiers from different XTERRA triathlon series of races, including the XTERRA Saipan Championship, considered the jewel of the XTERRA global tour.

The Maui triathlon course is legendary as it combines a 1.5-kilometer swim in the water of the Pacific Ocean, 30-km of mountain biking with more than 3,000 feet of climbing up the slopes of Maui’s Haleakala Volcano, and an 11-km trail run covering a dozen different surfaces from sand to lava rock.

Sitchon, who works as a service support supervisor at Island Business Systems and Supplies, qualified for the XTERRA World Championships after winning the 50-54 division in the 7th XTERRA Saipan Championship last March 8.
