MASC thanks sponsors of spearfishing tourney
Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club president Morito Asai the other day gave his heartfelt thanks to sponsors who made the 2nd Annual Spearfishing Tournament a success.
Asai, who visited the Saipan Tribune office Wednesday, said he would like to extend his gratitude to the event’s many sponsors, including MARPAC, Sen. Luis Crisostomo, Sen. Maria T. Pangelinan, Marianas Visitors Authority, Saipan Fishermen’s Association, Pacifica Insurance, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Aquarius Beach Tower, Fishing Tackle Saipan, Rep. Joseph Deleon Guerrero, Rep. Ralph Torres, Rep. Diego T. Benavente, Ren’s Restaurant, Moomin Mura Restaurant, Asin’s Fish Mart and its fishermen, Johnny’s Bar & Grill, Bruce Bateman, Aimrite, Cressi-Sub, Omer, and Hawaii Skin Diver.
The MASC official also gave kudos to boat volunteers and the organizing committee for making sure the tournament was held without a hitch. Asai also thanked DPS Boating Safety, Division of Fish and Wildlife, Smiling Cove Marina, American Memorial Park, Scott Leon Guerrero, and Saipan Ice and Water Company.
Mike Genereux and the tandem of Scott Russel and Peter Houk topped the individual and team categories respectively of the 2nd Annual Spearfishing Tournament, which was held last May 17 in the waters around Saipan.
Genereux earned the top spearfishermen award after catching 47.4 lbs. of fish, followed by Jess Hapdei (47 lbs.), and Russel (45.22 lbs.).
Russel and Houk, meanwhile, dominated the team competition after hauling 72.92 lbs. of fish back to shore. Genereux and Myles Driscoll came in a far second (62.7 lbs). while James and Ken Borja finished third (45.22 lbs.)
In other prizes, Brian Fitzgerald won the parrotfish category (4.66 lbs), Mike Lizama the trivally (4.66 lbs.), Cliff Sabo the rudderfish (3.14 lbs.), Felix T. Sasamoto the black snapper (1.5 lbs.), Anthony Roberts the sweetlips (4.44 lbs.), Nick Gross the unicorn fish (5.14 lbs.), Dan Repeki the grouper (2.64 lbs.), Frank Pangelinan the emperor (3.26 lbs.), and Roberts again in the goatfish category (1.08 lbs.).
