Fitial says US stimulus checks welcomed
With the first batch of U.S. stimulus checks already being mailed, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial expressed gratitude to the U.S. Congress and the President of the United States for including the CNMI in America’s economic stimulus program.
“I am grateful to the U.S. government for including the CNMI. The cash infusion from the U.S. government comes at just the right time for many families in our community,” said Fitial. “The funds are needed to pay for expenses and provide an added boost to consumer spending.”
Fitial also thanked Finance Secretary Eloy Inos and his staff for quickly processing the checks and complying with IRS requirements.
“I am very pleased with our Finance Department’s work in getting these checks out expeditiously,” said Fitial.
In his State of the Commonwealth Address on May 2, Fitial promised to start issuing federal economic stimulus checks by the end of May.
“I am pleased to make good on my promise, thanks to our fine staff at the Department of Finance” said Fitial.
Fitial had also pledged to continue releasing local tax refunds and rebates in a timely manner, which had previously not been accomplished in several years.
Fitial secured some $26 million in federal cover over funds late last year and began distributing tax refund and rebate checks for the 2006 tax year.
Fitial has directed the Secretary of Finance to earmark the collected federal cover over funds for the payment of local tax refunds and rebates.
“With the record spikes in fuel costs, I trust that these tax rebate and stimulus checks will provide a significant measure of financial relief to many struggling families and individuals,” said the Governor. (PR)
