The government has appropriated $25,000 for college students from Tinian who have transferred to the Saipan campus of the Northern Marianas College.

Acting Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez signed House Local Bill 16-8 into law on Friday.

“The administration fully supports this measure because it will provide much needed funding for all qualified students from Tinian who are attending Northern Marianas College in Saipan,” Villagomez said.

The $25,000 funds came from Tinian’s poker license fees. Tinian charges local poker fess amounting to $4,000 per machine.

He asked the college president to provide the Tinian Legislative Delegation and the Department of Finance a detailed report of the fund after it has been spent.

NMC stopped offering credit courses at the Tinian and Rota sites on Oct. 8, 2007. The suspension followed a determination that educational and student services on both campuses are not equal to that on Saipan.

It is not clear how many students were transferred from Tinian to Saipan.

Currently, only federal programs are still available on the Tinian and Rota campuses. These federal programs include the cooperative research, extension and education service, adult basic education, educational talent search, and other professional development workshops that focus on vocational and professional training.

In January 2008, the CNMI’s only institution for higher learning was placed on show-cause status. The college has up to October 2008 to come up with reasons why it should retain its accreditation. In January 2009, the accrediting commission will render their decision whether the college should continue to operate or close it down.
