5 hurt in 3-vehicle collision
Five persons were hurt, including two women who were seriously injured, during a three-vehicle collision that resulted in a van flipping to its side along Beach Road, Garapan yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, two vehicles also collided at the accident-prone Middle Road-Sugar King Park intersection yesterday afternoon. No one was reported seriously injured.
The two women were immediately brought to the Commonwealth Health Center. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro told Saipan Tribune late afternoon yesterday that she was still waiting for an update on the condition of the two women.
Allan Baltazar Vila, 34, and Mike Sablan, 37, both employees of 99 Cents Department Store, suffered bruises in the arms and legs. They were also taken to CHC.
An 18-year-old male, the son of former Tinian senator Joaquin Adriano, suffered a minor scratch on his left arm.
The teenager told Saipan Tribune that he was driving south aboard a Nissan Frontier pickup truck when the red Mazda Protégé car he was following suddenly stopped to turn on Taibwo Street.
The teenager’s truck ended up striking the back bumper of the Mazda Protégé.
“The red car should have stopped in the center lane!” said the teenager. The former senator was the teen’s passenger but he was not hurt.
Saipan Tribune learned from witnesses that when the pickup truck hit the Protege, the Protégé was pushed into the northbound lane where it collided with the northbound KIA van.
The van ended up flipping and resting on its left side near the shoulder of the road in front of the 777 Store. The driver, Vila, and his passenger, Sablan, crawled out of the van and sat on the grass.
The Protégé swerved to the shoulder of the northbound lane and stopped before hitting some tangan-tangan trees. The female driver was bloodied and appeared unconscious. Her female passenger was also injured.
Responding medics, with the assistance of some motorists, pulled the two women from the car, which sustained extensive damage to the back bumper and right side.
The pickup truck had minor damage to the front bumper. The van had extensive damage to the front bumper and its windshield was shattered.
DPS is expected to release today a report of the accident.
