An urgent need to change

I read with special interest Ruth L. Tighe’s article that appeared in the letter to the editor on Monday, June 9. The article talks about power options from the nuclear generating facilities. As an engineer, I read many technical papers as well as meet with other engineers including those in the nuclear power generating field.

Not only is it a feasible alternative but it makes sense and more so given the location such as ours. We are too small to influence any world-driven events, the price of oil will continue to be dictated by others beyond our control.

What does it take to have a cost-effective power generating facility in our location? Besides money, our will. Do we have it? I have serious reservations.

We however can make a difference by working on first electing the right leaders. We are at a very difficult point in our lives. We need to change. We need new leaders. Leaders that are for the CNMI and not mindful of not being re-elected.

Geothermal power is not the solution. It is far too expensive given our population. The recovery cost is too high.

Following up on my other earlier letter to the editor, we can do it. We can make a difference by voting responsibly. Let’s elect new leaders. Let’s elect based on qualifications and accomplishments and willingness to put aside personal gains for the benefit of the community.

Remember that picture of one person standing in front of a tank stopping the tank during the uprising in Tiananman Square in China? Look at it as the tank representing the self-interest leaders that we have so many of now in power. It was not another tank or an army that stopped that tank in Tiananman Square; rather it was one person.
