BOE to discuss criteria for COE position
The Board of Education has scheduled a special board meeting this morning and one item on the agenda is to discuss the selection criteria and announcement of the Commissioner of Education position.
BOE chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita said the BOE will be taking up matters relating to the recruitment efforts beginning today. “It is our goal to have someone in place before the school year opens in September,” she added.
Education Commissioner David Borja’s last day was on June 4, 2008. He recommended Jackie Quitugua, associate commissioner for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Service, to the BOE as his replacement.
Blanco-Maratita said there are no potential candidates at this point and until the BOE announces the position, only then the board will know who among those that apply will be considered.
She stressed that the selection of the new commissioner will be made by the full board and not by one person.
When asked what prompted the BOE to ask for Borja’s resignation, Blanco-Maratita said, “Such matters were discussed in an executive session. …Suffice it to say that the commissioner is hired by the board and serves at the pleasure of the board. Under the Constitution, the board is given the responsibility of formulating education policies and administering the school system through the commissioner.”
