Job security assured for Middle East-bound cops
Department of Public Safety commissioner Claudio K. Norita has assured the job security of 32 DPS personnel who have been called up for deployment next month to the Middle East.
In his directive to DPS division commanders and supervisors, Norita said the job, rank, salary, and department assignment of the troop members are secured and will be waiting for them when they return.
The commissioner asked the commanders and supervisors to extend full cooperation and assistance to the troops who will be deployed by July 15.
“Please work closely with you reservist personnel and coordinate their needs to take leave or comp-time to get their personal life in order before deployment,” said Norita in his directive.
He said some of the personnel are going on their second deployment and that the DPS management understands the necessity for them to spend time with their family and friends before the departure date.
“At the same time, I want to emphasize the importance of our personnel to start carrying light assignments while they prepare for deployment,” Norita said.
The commissioner directed the DPS timekeeper to assist the troops in ensuring that they exhaust their military and annual leave and comp-time before switching their status to leave without pay.
He reminded the timekeeper that the personnel are granted a certain amount of military leave per calendar year and that they are properly credited while they are away.
DPS is expected to incur more overtime fees with the eventual deployment of its 32 police officers and firefighters.
Norita earlier told Saipan Tribune that the departure of the personnel means that the department’s overtime costs will increase between July and August 2008 as the remaining personnel cover the officers that are gone.
