Two students from the Northern Marianas College Upward Bound Program have recently been selected to attend four-week math and science summer programs in Hawaii and California.

Kenneth Palec, a junior at Kagman High School, will be attending the program at the Leeward Community College campus in Pearl City, Hawaii, and Klynne Serrano, a sophomore at Marianas High School, will be attending the program at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California.

The purpose of the math and science summer program is to motivate and excite students to consider careers in fields requiring math or science, to increase academic skills, to prepare students for college programs, and to provide guidance for academic, career, and personal needs. Generally, it is a summer, residential, pre-college program offering coursework in math (algebra through calculus), English, literature, composition, Spanish, Japanese, Hawaiian, biotechnology, forensics chemistry, marine biology, physics and college/career guidance.

“It will be an educational and personal experience for me,” Palec said. “I hope to learn new things to improve myself and enhance my college life skills. I am grateful for being chosen for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“I hope to learn more about science and mathematics which will help me decide what career to pursue,” Serrano said.

The program will further provide them with the experience of living in a college environment, immersed in a math and science study program with other participants who have goals similar to theirs.

Palec and Serrano will also participate in laboratory and field activities that emphasize skill development in note taking, quantification, observation, and description, graphing, independent and group research, experimental techniques, and oral reporting. Workshops, guest speakers, counseling, and enrichment activities will be conducted to enhance learning.

Palec is the son of Joseph and Felina Butters and Serrano is the daughter of Manuel and Kathleen Serrano. (NMC)
